What We’re Reading

Book Two

E.M. Forster
The Machine Stops

The Machine Stops is a masterpiece science fiction short story written in November 1909 by E.M. Forster (Passage It India, Howard’s End, Room with a View).  At a powerful 25 pages, this is a stunning prophecy of humanity’s reliance on technology that reads with little judgement and enough heart.

In The Machine Stops, humanity has isolated itself beneath the ground and is enmeshed in automated comforts, controlled by the Machine.  The Machine meets all of humanity’s needs, except for the need of human contact.  People live in isolated cells, communicating only by audio and visual devices.  The Earth’s surface is unliveable due extreme climate events, yet life underground is full of comforts.
